How do essential oils work?

Essential oils have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier when absorbed topically on the skin, and even more quickly through inhalation. When the fragrance of an essential oil is inhaled, tiny particles come into contact with the receptors of olfactory bulb of the brain – which sits in close proximity to areas of the brain that manage our moods, respond to stress and stimulate memory.
